Position summary

This position is part of the Information Technology Hosting team of Enterprise Architecture and Platforms. The role is accountable for leading delivery and support of an effective, cost-disciplined compute infrastructure that hosts IT capabilities enabling the research mission of the BMS Discovery and Translational Medicine business units. In addition, this role is responsible for managing the development and implementation of a global application-delivery framework that includes internal/hybrid cloud computing capabilities, network traffic management, and load balancing.

The position has budget responsibilities for platform software and IT services, including hypervisors such as VMware vSphere, operational tools such as VMware vRealize, application-delivery infrastructure such as F5 products, and service providers such as DXC, BT, and suppliers of colocation services.

The duties include liaising with external Service Providers (SP’s) and software vendors to ensure compliance and acting as a point of escalation for IT Hosting issues. With SP’s and software vendors, and in alignment with BMS internal teams, this position supports Incident/Problem management, CMDB quality assurance, and CAPA coordination. Duties also include monitoring Hosted Services for quality, performance, cost, and reliability. The position is responsible for assuring SP’s delivery against committed service level agreements (SLAs) and managing formal recovery plans that result from SLA misses.

Primary responsibilities

Management of a group of senior IT professional responsible for:

  • engineering and operation of virtualized hosting capabilities supporting research.

  • development and automation of an internal/hybrid cloud framework.

  • evaluation and recommendation of strategies and tools for public cloud hosting.

  • advising the global BMS IT architecture roadmap.

Planning and justification of the Virtualization Engineering strategic direction.

Partnering with IT Business Partners, Digital Capability Management, developers, and researchers to understand business objectives and priorities and to develop aligned IT solutions.

Advocating for the IT needs of Discovery and Translational Medicine with the appropriate leadership structure and Governance Boards.

Creating and driving technology standards and architectures, in partnership with BMS IT colleagues.

Scanning the technical landscape for leading-edge solutions to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Leading cross-functional projects that identify, plan, design, develop, and deliver new IT capabilities for the Company.

Managing the IT operating budget for hosting services provided by service providers.

Development of staff through training, mentoring, stretch assignments, and exposure to external IT ideas.

Driving continuous improvement of hosting services, with a focus on speed, quality, and usability.

Contributing to Company site footprint optimization, including building out infrastructure at new sites and migrations to and from existing sites.

Serving as business owner for hypervisor, operating system, and system automation software by:

  • planning for multi-year license purchases, support, and lifecycle management.

  • executing software purchases and participating in negotiation as appropriate.

Regularly reviewing team activities and redistributing work as needed to improve efficiency and cost.

As needed, assembling SWAT teams of colleagues at various levels to address urgent BMS IT needs.

Availability for occasional off-hours and weekend work as needed.

Taking work out wherever possible.

Driving compliance with best practice, regulations, and BMS internal procedures.

Contributing to the culture of Enterprise Architecture and Platforms, as well as BMS as a whole, by active engagement with the business and participation in IT workplace activities, such as internal conferences and dialogues.

Qualifications and experience

Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effectiveness in meetings, presentations, and writing, and the ability to effectively build alignment and influence others in a matrix environment.

At least 10 years of experience in the IT profession.

Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.

Willingness to serve in a 24x7 on-call cycle to manage escalations.

Experience with building and leading effective technical teams and developing staff members.

Demonstrated ability to develop complex business justifications and to implement and manage new IT capabilities.

Experience with infrastructure qualification and validation of computerized systems.

Experience with response to regulatory authorities such as FDA, including internal/external audit on items such as cGxP and SOX.

Understanding of organizational dynamics in a global corporation.

Competency in developing and managing processes for an IT operations environment.

Ability to analyze data, gather critical information, judge quality, and deliver timely information to support business and management decision-making.

Extensive experience managing both service contracts and licensing agreements.

Skill and experience with managing a budget, including forecasting projections, modeling future consumption, and meeting financial commitments.

Technical and operational understanding of data centers, server infrastructure, and virtualization.

Experience with deployment and support of Windows, Linux and VMware based environments.

Experience with operating systems, networking, protocols, databases, applications and their interactions.

Following ITIL based service delivery – Configuration/Change/Incident/Problem Management.

Experience with DNS, HTTP, SSL.

Understanding of application models (e.g. client/server, n-tier web).

Familiarity with load balancing.

Skill at performance analysis of distributed systems.

Knowledge of system tuning.

Integration with security and authentication environments, models, systems (Active Directory, LDAP).

Experience with complex projects dealing with Mission critical applications.


Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or math required.

Formal training in AWS cloud desirable.
