The Senior Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is part of the Devens site EHS team and will report to the Associate Director, EHS.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop, execute, manage, and continuously improve various environment, health and safety (EHS) programs such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work/line breaking, powered industrial trucks, lifts/hoists, electrical safety, contractor safety, crisis management, and/or emergency response.
Work as an individual contributor on a highly-skilled team of EHS professionals. Work closely with the entire EHS team to develop and implement best-in-class EHS programs for the Devens site.
Support the EHS training program by assisting in developing and delivering training materials.
Influence the EHS compliance programs at the facility through active planning, assessment, and correction of work activities conducted by both BMS and contract employees.
Serve as a key EHS point of contact for one or more functional units at the facility.
Support the EHS self-audit/assessment program.
Primary focus of the role will be occupational safety and health with limited support to environment program elements as needed.
Perform work place hazard/risk/exposure assessments for current and future process introductions.
Support accident/incident investigations and management of EHS software applications.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of industrial environmental health and safety generally attained through studies resulting in a B.S. in engineering, environmental science, safety, related discipline, or its equivalent is preferred.
Working knowledge of EHS regulations and disciplines.
Prefer 6 or more years of experience working in the EHS field, preferably in a manufacturing or R&D environment in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry.
Demonstrated success in communicating effectively with regulatory authorities, employees, management, contractors, and the public.
Proficient in translating complex regulatory requirements into actionable programs.
Success in developing and implementing innovative solutions to complex regulatory requirements and business needs in a dynamic environment.
Proven track record for working across different levels and functions of an organization in an effective manner, constantly looking out for the overall good of the organization.
Experience creating and improving operational safety programs in clinical/commercial manufacturing and/or R&D environments.
Experience and ability to support a continuously operating facility by addressing EHS issues that occur outside of normal work hours.
Works on multiple projects simultaneously and collaborates effectively.
Familiarity with EHS management systems. and maintains solid computer application skills.
Contacts: Daily contact with site employees, contractors, and EHS team members with a focus of providing daily support to 1 or more key departments as an EHS client representative. Periodic contact with BMS Global EHS Staff and occasional interactions with governmental authorities.
Working Conditions: Works within a modern office environment with regular entry into clinical/commercial manufacturing suites, Central Utility Buildings, warehouses, and laboratories. Use of company-provided Personal Protection Equipment will be required.
Decision-Making: Works independently and as part of cross functional teams, to resolve deficiencies and implement continuous improvement initiatives. May work on assignments that are complex in nature where independent action and a high degree of initiative are required in resolving problems and developing recommendations. Acts as an advisor to internal customers and is actively involved to meet schedules or resolve problems.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under general direction. Independently determines and develops an approach to solutions. Will reach out to other members of the EHS team for consistency in approach for problem solving and ensuring compliant resolutions when appropriate. Work may be reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Frequently receives assignments which do not have a clearly defined process to complete the assignment. Specific assignments determined based upon the recipient’s demonstrated capabilities/strengths, personal development plan, and site functional needs.
