Bristol Myers Squibb Associate Scientist I in Devens, Massachusetts


Analytical scientist supporting development of late stage, and marketed biologic products as part of the Process Analytics & Operations team. This team resides within the Manufacturing Sciences and Technology organization (MS&T), applying established and new analytical methodology to commercial and transitional products.


  • Perform a variety of technical analytical assays supporting process development, clinical manufacturing, late stage and marketed activities of biological products

  • Support analytical methods as needed throughout the BMS network, third party manufacturing and outside testing labs. This includes interfacing with clients directly and performance of analytical investigations

  • Performs testing and completes work based on priority with minimal supervision

  • Documents results and reviews laboratory notebooks

  • Proficient in use of electronic systems (LIMS, Excel, electronic notebook, etc.)

  • Trains others on analytical methods and/or SOPs

  • Maintains laboratory instrumentation and systems

  • Participates in cross-site and cross-functional meetings, actively builds relationships with direct teams and shares data and knowledge within a team

  • Participates in evaluation of assay performance and analytical data

  • Able to seek technical information and prepares and reviews technical documents, protocols, reports, summaries, and SOPs.

  • Participates in the qualification of critical reagents

  • Completes all required training

  • Demonstrates practical knowledge about biological manufacturing processes

  • May need to work according to cGMP requirements


Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, etc:

  • Must demonstrate ability to follow written SOPs, general scientific methods, and protocols, and to write technical documents and reports.

  • Hands on expertise in assays used for physicochemical testing and characterization of biological products (e.g. HPLC, Gel and Capillary Electrophoresis, UV-Vis Spectrophotometry, compendial methods, etc.).

  • Hands on expertise in assays used cell-based and/or ELISA based testing and characterization of biological products (e.g. HPLC, Gel and Capillary Electrophoresis, UV-Vis Spectrophotometry, compendial methods, etc.).

  • Must be proficient with chromatography data software (e.g. EMPOWER) and data management systems

  • Must possess strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills

  • Must have experience supporting multiple individual and team objectives and must possess a strong team ethic.

Education/Experience/ Licenses/Certifications:

Position requires a minimum of a BS with 2 or more years of relevant experience or an MS in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field and/or relevant biotechnology coursework.

Physical Demands:

This position is a lab-based position which requires appropriate levels of personal protective equipment (PPE). This role will require contact with biohazardous materials such as live cell cultures and other hazardous chemicals including methotrexate, acids, and caustics. Powdered materials and high temperature liquids and solids are also handled. Frequent repeated motions such as pipetting, lifting, bending, twisting, squatting, crouching, kneeling, climbing on step-stools, and reaching is required. This role may require unassisted lifting (not to exceed 50 lbs). Repetitive use of arms/hands/wrists and grasping is also required. Depending on the work demands, office-based work requires sitting.

Work Environment:

This position is based indoors and will primarily work with others, but also independently and alone at times. The candidate must possess a strong commitment to safety.
