The Global Procurement Category Manager will lead BMS sourcing efforts for direct materials, focused predominantly on driving standardized platform of materials to enable speed and supply assurance for the pipeline and clinical / commercial supply products for the BMS Global Product Development and Supply network. This role will engage closely with Product Development and Manufacturing Sciences and Technology to align on specifications, expectations, and requirements of direct materials suppliers. Assignments could include cell culture media, chemicals, and any other direct material used in pharmaceutical and biologics manufacturing. The Category Manager will be part of a team dedicated to developing and deploying category strategies for the range of direct materials. The Category Manager must be able to engage technically, operationally, and commercially to understand and enable speed, high quality performance, supply assurance, and risk mitigation for the pipeline and clinical/commercial supply. Communication with a broad stakeholder group from scientist to operations and quality teams is critical for this role.
Lead procurement efforts around enabling the Raw Materials Category Strategy.
Lead materials category strategy development for at least one Direct Materials subcategory.
Work in conjunction with Product Development, Site Procurement colleagues, and Category Leads to develop risk assessment, standard platform strategy, and enable improved speed and supply delivery and responsiveness to the clinical supply network.
Act as key point of contact for specific supply integrators, distributors, and/or suppliers as it pertains to responsible categories of goods and in alignment with the overall Direct Materials category.
Create, issue, and manage large-scope request for proposals (RFPs), confidential disclosure agreements (CDAs), addenda, negotiations, contracts, and awards associated with site critical projects.
Provide leadership and guidance to key business partners around supply and purchase compliance with pertinent policies for supplier selection and contracting.
Create, issue, and manage large-scope RFPs, CDAs, addenda, negotiations, contracts, and awards associated with Direct Materials requirements as necessary.
Develop / support a change management process for materials development standard platform once it is created.
Support navigation of governance around materials sourcing and selections as it pertains to pipeline advancement, and ensure commercially-viable sources advance to late-stage pipeline product processes.
Leverage e-sourcing tools, where applicable, including reverse auction to achieve superior cost savings year over year. Provide strategic direction to department for the development of high-impact e-sourcing templates and deliverables to reduce bid launch-to-award cycle times utilizing support from the Sourcing Excellence group.
Partner with clinical and commercial operations, site procurement colleagues, finance, legal and other enterprise operations managers to resolve supply network continuity issues related to purchasing, as required.
Regularly meet with stakeholders to discuss requirements, expectations, monitor supplier service level and priorities. Drive continuous improvements in all aspects.
Desired Skills and Experience:
B.S./B.A. degree in science or engineering is required. M.S., M.B.A., M.A., or equivalent master’s degree in science, business administration, operations management, engineering, finance, or other technical field is highly preferred.
Experience: 5-10 years of relevant experience in sciences or technical operations is highly preferred.
Prior process development experience in biopharmaceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and/or medical device industry is highly preferred.
Knowledge and proficiency with SAP and/or Ariba system is desired.
Relevant industry certifications are desired (CPM/CPSM/CSCP/CPIM).
Possess exceptional communication and presentation skills and be able to communicate to multiple levels internal or external to BMS.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally as critical member of site team.
Must have a strong customer service orientation with excellent analytic, interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
Must have a proactive, creative and analytical approach to challenges.
Demonstrated high degree of independence, requiring minimal supervision from senior management.
Ability to demonstrate both empathy and assertiveness when communicating a need and/or defending a position/decision.
Strong project management capability, including identification and communication of potential problems for decision makers to keep “projects” on track.
